The Flags of the 69th New York
We in the 69th New York, Company B do a mid-1862 impression. 1862 was when the 69th was in its prime, and did most of its famous action. The flags that we carry on the reenactment battlefields are as authentic and as close to the originals as it was possible for us to do. About six months of research went into both flags. The spear tip on the Regimental was custom made by a member of the unit and the eagle on the national is an original from the 1800s.
The original flags were about six foot wide and six and a half long. The were made by Tiffany and Company, the best (and most expensive) flag company during the Civil War. The flags were made of silk and were hand embroidered.
The National flag was sewn by Alice Gilbert, and was painted, (embroidery being way to expensive) by Lt. Joe Gilbert. The green 1st Regt. Irish Brigade flag was sewn by Alice Gilbert and painted by Dave Macetelli.
